Layering Carving & Inlay Methods -Mishima, Sgraffito, & Relief 11/10/26, 10AM -1 PM
Tuesday, November 10th
10AM-1PM with Crystal Dunn
$65
Take your carving skills to the next level in this fun class exploring Sgraffito, Mishima, and Relief carving techniques.
Sgraffito: Layer engobes and underglazes onto the surface of leather hard clay, then carve or scratch your design.
Mishima: Explore using various types of resist to protect areas before carving, then how to inlay engobes and underglazes to add color to exposed clay.
Relief: Learn carving and wipe away methods for removing clay to create raised surfaces that make your designs pop!
In this workshop we’ll briefly discuss each technique, then demonstrate how to plan works that involve one, two, or all three methods. We’ll talk about how to plan your designs, how to incorporate underglaze transfers (optional), and the best tools for the job. The goal of this class is not to achieve a “perfect” piece, but to understand the methods and identify when and how they can work for you. Bring your willingness to experiment and make mistakes!
Students will first practice on scrap clay, then choose from available pre-made leather hard pieces to create a cohesive piece. Students are welcome to bring their own pre-made leather hard pieces to work on as well.
Some experience with ceramics is recommended for this class.
Discounted Shipping available.
